Eels found swimming in downtown Bangor parking lot

On Friday afternoon, with steady rain coming down in Bangor, eels were spotted swimming on Main Street.

Chris Pushor, of Old Town, took a picture of the eels and shared it on Facebook with the caption, “I understand it’s raining hard but eels swimming in Shaws parking lot interesting.”

“I first thought it was a snake until I got out of the car and looked closer,” said Pushor in an interview on Friday.

“There were about ten in the parking area, some were still alive and others had been hit by cars. The big one was about two feet long, it was just a surprise to see them.”

A store manager at the Shaw’s Supermarket on Main Street confirmed that the eels were in the store’s parking lot, and assumed they came from the Penobscot River across the street.

Store employees swept the eels up and returned them to the river safely.

The photo has been shared thousands of times on social media in less than two hours.
